We came up with "S.o.S.” because we think that works by students should be given a public forum right from the start. We also think it's important for students to get to know each other and exchange ideas. And finally, as a space where young choreographers in particular present their first works outside of school, in our series "NAH DRAN" ("Up Close") or "10 times 6", it is our concern to accompany and support artistic careers from early on. After the great success of the last two years, also the 2017 edition of "S.o.S." will be curated by young graduates of the M.A. Dance Studies of Freie Universität Berlin.
The festival “S.o.S. – Students on Stage” brings together selected works created by students of all of Berlin ‘s various educational institutions for contemporary dance. Already in its third edition, this festive constellation of these institutions can be sighted on May 27-28, 2017. A diverse program of short dance pieces will be presented, compounding various aesthetics and challenging our viewing habits. “S.o.S.” is committed to increasing networking amongst students while sharpening the gaze towards and then beyond the educational context. Concurrently, the audience is asked to follow this perspective shift and invited to encounter this wide range.
For 2017, the curators, Cilgia Carla Gadola, Alexandra Hennig and Johanna Withelm, combine further the students' strengths. Their goal is the establishment of an alumni council, whose function is to represent the interests of graduates in the interest of the public in relation to cultural policy. Convinced that the diversity of focal points in dance education and talent will have a chance to be presented, this year the theme of “S.o.S.” is COMPLICITY.
