Uferstudios GmbH

Uferstudios GmbH is the central contact point for partners, artists and visitors to the site. With various projects, it promotes networking and synergies between the artists working here, the partners based here and the opening up of the Uferstudios to the neighbourhood and the wider urban society. It is the operating company of the Uferstudios and the publisher of this website.

In addition to maintaining the overall location and long-term rental to partners, Uferstudios GmbH currently manages a total of six to eight studios that are available for temporary rental to freelance artists, as well as free common rooms. Studio rental is open to all artistic projects in the fields of dance, choreography and performance. The selection of tenants is not curated, but follows the principle "first come, first served".

As a working production and research space, Uferstudios GmbH has the necessary infrastructure to support the working artists in all practical matters. Both as a working and presentation location, Uferstudios GmbH gives the projects the greatest possible freedom and autonomy within the framework of all legal and safety aspects.

The projects of Uferstudios GmbH that take place in cooperation, such as the AUSUFERN programme series or the Heizhaus programme, focus on artistic engagement with the neighbourhood and as an intensification of artistic work as an opening to and in dialogue with a broad urban society.

Uferstudios GmbH supports artistic experiments and their communication to a broad audience. It is committed to a structural improvement of the working conditions of dance professionals as well as to project-related concerns of the urban society.

Through its current use and a 198-year leasehold agreement, Uferstudios GmbH is also responsible for preserving the former Gesundbrunnen tram depot as an industrial monument from the 1920s. Since 2012, Uferstudios GmbH has been the owner of the site via a hereditary building lease and considers the object of the company - "the promotion of artistic and scientific education, mediation, production and presentation of contemporary dance" - to be potentially secured for 198 years. This means that the artistic use of the buildings is fixed until 2210 and the premises are thus protected from profit-oriented, speculative exploitation pressure.

The production and presentation space was realised on the initiative of the independent Berlin dance scene, ZTB e.V. and the TanzRaumBerlin network, with support for the renovation measures from the Stiftung Deutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin. In 2018, renewed funding from the foundation and the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments also made it possible to renovate and expand the Heizhaus complex on the grounds. Since 2020, interdisciplinary co-productions and participatory processes have been made possible here, focusing on the joint search for connections between art and the city, artists and citizens/neighbours. The last construction project for the time being was the renovation of the 62-metre-high chimney with funding from the Berlin State Office for the Protection of Monuments and the German Foundation for the Protection of Monuments.
